New Costco at Bingham Crossing: What Cochrane and West Calgary Residents Should Know
If you’ve driven Highway 1 west of Calgary lately, you’ve probably noticed the construction around the Highway 1 and Range Road 33 interchange. New ramps, roadwork, roundabouts and a new bridge are all part of major changes underway around Bingham Crossing.
At the centre of the attention is something many residents have been waiting for: a new Costco is under construction at Bingham Crossing and is expected to open in fall 2026.
For residents of Cochrane, Valley Ridge, Crestmont, Springbank and west Calgary, the new development could change where many people shop and how traffic moves through this already busy stretch of Highway 1.
Where is the new Bingham Crossing Costco?
Bingham Crossing is located at Highway 1 and Range Road 33 in Rocky View County, approximately 3.2 kilometres west of Calgary and diagonally across Highway 1 from Calaway Park.
That location makes the project particularly relevant to residents travelling between Calgary and Cochrane, as well as people living in Springbank and communities along Calgary's western edge.
The Costco warehouse will be part of the first phase of Bingham Crossing. Alberta Major Projects currently lists the warehouse at approximately 165,000 square feet. Costco purchased an 18-acre parcel for the development, and Rocky View County issued a building permit valued at approximately $25.8 million in January 2026.
When will the Bingham Crossing Costco open?
The new Costco at Bingham Crossing is currently expected to open in fall 2026.
An exact opening date has not yet been announced, so we would be cautious about any specific date circulating online until Costco or the development officially confirms it.
And while Costco may open this fall, that doesn't mean all of the surrounding construction will be finished at the same time.
What's happening with the Highway 1 and Range Road 33 interchange?
This is where the timeline gets a little more complicated.
There are several transportation improvements underway around Bingham Crossing, including work on the Highway 1 and Range Road 33 interchange, Range Road 33 and Township Road 250.
Rocky View County says Stage 1 improvements are expected to continue until fall 2027. Those improvements include changes to the Highway 1 ramps as well as twinning portions of Range Road 33 and Township Road 250 adjacent to Bingham Crossing.
There is also a new four-lane bridge being constructed at Highway 1 and Range Road 33. Construction on that bridge began in November 2025, with substantial completion currently expected in November 2026.
So yes, if the current schedules hold, Costco could open before all of the surrounding interchange work is complete.
Why is so much road construction happening?
Costco isn't the only reason.
Rocky View County describes the Highway 1 and Range Road 33 interchange as regionally significant infrastructure. The interchange already serves residents and provides access to destinations including Springbank Airport, Calaway Park, Springbank schools, Edge School and other services in the area. Growth in Harmony and the development of Bingham Crossing have added to the need for improvements.
The work associated with Bingham Crossing includes widened roads, changes to highway access and new roundabouts designed to accommodate future traffic in the area.
For anyone who regularly drives this stretch of Highway 1, the important takeaway is simple: the Costco opening is one milestone in a much larger transportation and development project.
Bingham Crossing will be much more than Costco
Costco is the anchor, but it isn't the entire Bingham Crossing development.
Bingham Crossing describes the project as a pedestrian-oriented shopping and lifestyle centre. Its first phase encompasses approximately 80 acres, and future development is planned to include additional shopping, dining and services, municipal green spaces and a 190-unit seniors housing complex.
That means what residents see when Costco first opens won't represent the finished Bingham Crossing.
The area is expected to continue evolving well beyond the Costco opening.
What does the new Costco mean for Cochrane residents?
For Cochrane residents, location is what makes this project particularly interesting.
Bingham Crossing sits directly on the Highway 1 corridor east of Cochrane, between the community and Calgary. That creates another Costco option in the region and puts a major new retail development along a route many Cochrane residents already use.
Exactly how convenient it will be will depend on where someone lives in Cochrane, traffic conditions and how the interchange construction progresses.
It's also worth remembering that Bingham Crossing itself will continue developing. Costco may be the reason many people first visit, but additional retail, restaurants and services are planned for future phases.
What does it mean for Valley Ridge, Crestmont and west Calgary?
For communities on Calgary's western edge, Bingham Crossing is close enough to potentially become part of everyday shopping patterns.
Valley Ridge and Crestmont residents already have quick access to Highway 1, while Springbank residents are even closer to the development.
The trade-off, at least initially, is construction.
If Costco opens according to the current fall 2026 schedule, drivers may be visiting the new store while portions of the surrounding road network are still being completed. Stage 1 interchange improvements currently extend into fall 2027.
Anyone heading to Bingham Crossing after Costco opens should therefore expect the area to continue changing.
