Citadel's New Playground Is Coming in 2027: What's Happening in This NW Calgary Community

Citadel Playground Replacement Confirmed for 2027

A familiar neighbourhood space in Citadel, northwest Calgary, is getting a new beginning.

The wooden playground at 3 Citadel Park NW, which served local families for decades, was removed in 2025 because of safety concerns and deterioration. Originally, the City of Calgary planned to replace the aging structure with a recreational game park featuring activities such as table tennis, cornhole and funnel ball.

However, community feedback prompted the City to reconsider. Following another round of public engagement in May 2026, residents expressed their preference for a more traditional playground. The City has now confirmed plans to proceed with a new playground structure, with installation anticipated in 2027.

The project is moving through the design and procurement process, with timelines dependent on budget allocations and equipment availability.

What Will the New Citadel Playground Include?

Although the final playground design has not been announced, the City has confirmed that the replacement will feature traditional playground equipment designed to accommodate different age groups.

There are a few important details residents should know:

  • Location: 3 Citadel Park NW, Calgary
  • Replacement: A new traditional playground structure
  • Anticipated installation: 2027
  • Swings: Not included because of space limitations
  • Final design: To be determined through the City's procurement and design process

The replacement will meet current playground design and safety standards.

Residents can follow the project through the City of Calgary's Citadel Playground Lifecycle page for updates as plans progress.

How Citadel Residents Helped Shape the Decision

One of the more interesting aspects of this project is the role community feedback played in determining what comes next.

In 2019, two new playgrounds were installed elsewhere in Citadel, with the understanding that the older wooden playground at 3 Citadel Park NW would eventually be removed when it no longer met safety standards. When the original structure was removed in 2025, plans were already underway to introduce a game park in its place. Some residents wanted the City to reconsider.

In response, the City opened another round of engagement from May 11 to May 25, 2026, asking residents whether they preferred the proposed game park or traditional playground equipment. The City received 206 responses. Following that consultation, the decision was made to move forward with traditional playground equipment. It's an example of how neighbourhood engagement can influence the future of shared community spaces.

For families living in Citadel, the planned playground will bring another opportunity for children to play and neighbours to connect.
