There’s a new addition to northwest Calgary’s recreation options. Rocky Ridge Athletic Park, located at 9700 Country Hills Boulevard NW beside the Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge, has opened with two artificial turf sports fields and supporting amenities.
For residents of Royal Oak, Rocky Ridge and surrounding northwest communities, the park adds another option for organized sport nearby. It also comes as infrastructure work continues in the area, making it helpful to distinguish what has opened, what is under construction and what is still being planned.
What Has Opened at Rocky Ridge Athletic Park?
The new park includes:
- Two artificial turf fields lined for soccer.
- Lighting for evening play.
- Spectator seating and a digital scoreboard.
- Washrooms and accessible parking.
The City celebrated the park’s opening on October 7, 2026, following the start of limited field bookings on September 24.
The park is a City of Calgary athletic facility, separate from the neighbouring YMCA. Teams and other user groups book the fields through the City.
Fall Bookings and the 2027 Season
The City announced a limited fall booking period from September 24 through October 29, 2026, weather permitting:
- Thursdays: 5–10 p.m.
- Saturdays: 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
Only full-field bookings are being offered during the initial season. The City plans to review demand, weather and operational needs to help shape the park’s 2027 operating plans.
Because availability can change, check the City’s Rocky Ridge Athletic Park page before making plans.
What Is Happening With the Proposed Fieldhouse?
The outdoor athletic park and the proposed indoor fieldhouse are separate parts of the larger Rocky Ridge Athletic Complex.
The City has approved funding for fieldhouse design, with design work and site studies scheduled through 2028. Construction funding and a construction start date remain to be confirmed.
The fieldhouse could expand indoor recreation opportunities in northwest Calgary, but residents should not interpret the outdoor park’s opening as confirmation that indoor construction is starting soon.
Why Is There Still Construction Nearby?
The athletic park is only one project in this part of northwest Calgary. Nearby excavation and road restoration also relate to the North Calgary Water Servicing Project, which is building a 22-kilometre feeder main and supporting facilities.
In its October/November 2026 update, the City reports that a section along Rocky Ridge Road NW and 144 Avenue NW has been installed, with landscaping and repaving continuing.
Another stage extends east along 144 Avenue NW, from 69 Street NW to just west of Sage Hill Drive NW. Work is scheduled in phases, with a winter pause and a spring 2027 restart.
The water project is intended to support future residential and commercial development and strengthen the water distribution system. These are separate construction activities with separate schedules, so the new fields opening does not mean all nearby work is finished.
What Should Royal Oak and Rocky Ridge Homebuyers Consider?
When comparing homes in northwest Calgary, look beyond the community name and consider the specific property’s location.
For a household involved in organized sports, access to the new fields may be useful. Other buyers may place more weight on nearby pathways, school locations, shopping or their daily commute.
Country Hills Boulevard covers a substantial distance. Being near one section does not mean a home is close to every amenity along it. Check the actual route from a property to the destinations you use most, including any current construction impacts.
